• Oil temperature must be at least 80 °C
• All vacuum lines must be airtight

Boost pressure is measured during a test drive. For safety reasons, it is imperative that a second person perform the measurements. Note that the test drive will exceed 56 mph - observe local speed limits.

• In right-hand drive cars, remove the trim below the steering wheel. In left-hand drive cars, remove the glovebox.
• Detach the vacuum line from the ECU
• Attach the VAG 1397 boost gauge between the vacuum line and the ECU.
• Open the VAG 1397's locking valve
• Accelerate the vehicle from 55kph in 3rd gear

Note: This is the official factory procedure, as documented. However, in right-hand drive cars, it leaves the ECU in the driver's footwell during the test drive and this is a significant safety hazard. For this reason, it is much preferable to attach the gauge directly to the inlet manifold ECU attachment point, leading a thin hose through the bonnet louvres and into the passenger side of the car through a slightly open window.
