Checking the idle and full load switches

25.562 Checking the idle and full load switches with the VAG 3084 angle gauge

CAUTION: It is possible to mis-set the throttle switches
such that they hold the throttle open - this can be dangerous

Note: The throttle body must be removed from the vehicle for this procedure. The cross-head screws used to locate the microswitches are notorious for shearing on older cars - given the very low price it may be appropriate to obtain a new bracket (035 133 095C) and four new fillibuster screws (N 014 154 1) in advance of starting, especially if the vehicle is in regular use.

If the test fails, adjust or replace the switch. Adjustment may involve loosening the mounting screws - usually very difficult - or simply bending the actuating lever on the microswitch. Always check function with full throttle travel - it is easy for the levers to fall behind the operating post on the throttle valve lever or even jam against the post, holding the throttle open.
