The VIN numbers of the "August 1982" cars are confused. ETKA gives 85-D-900 001 as the start point for a great many changes, but a lot of apparently later VINs in north america do not have these changes and seem to have been built in 1982. None of these cars made it to the uk - 85-D-900 543 is an earlier car - 85-D-900 556 is a later one. If there is indeed a clean break, it is between these numbers. It seems likely that cars were being built for the North American market during the 1982 model year and that a number range was reserved for them at the start of the 1983 model year - such blocks of numbers were often reserved for certain markets. Whatever the truth, there is no way that 20 people could have handbuilt 591 cars in one month.
