What's in the picture?
Since so many have asked the question - here's the answer.
- On the extreme left, a Nokia 9500. This has one of the widest displays of any handheld/PDA at 640 pixels and is used for testing client sites at this resolution and over various mobile links.
- The left laptop is an IBM Transnote. This was built to order by IBM, with a German keyboard, a UK English software load and German dictionary and thesaurus. It's mainly used for testing tablet applications - the Transnote has a built-in digitizer pad and a touch-sensitive screen. And the German keyboard helps with German web site optimization. QUERTZ and ZXCVB. It's also used for testing client sites at 800x640. Yeah, some people really are still using that. Not many, but ...
- HP41-CV with Extended Functions, statistics and finance modules. No other way to calculate. Reverse Polish Notation is still alive in Sheffield. There's a British Thornton P221 Comprehensive slide rule somewhere, too.
- An IBM A21P laptop with every possible bell and whistle. 1280x1024 is a de facto standard at present.
- A Siemens S65. With a 132 pixel width, probably the smallest Openwave device available. But there's a frequent visitor to the isham research site with a 122 pixel-wide screen.
And yes, it really was ten minutes to midnight when the picture was taken.
