If you put warm cabin air into the cold air supply from outdoors (17 
degrees F on my way to the ski hill this am), you'd get pretty misty air 
coming out the vents after the mix passed over the heater core, it seems to 
me.   I've always thought the closing door noises were from the flaps 
downstream of the heater that direct where the air goes.  They're operated 
by vacuum lines that I figured went to some closed mode when the system 
shuts off.
