I think we need more info for a definative answer.  Pull the codes, as a start.  Does the car now run normally?  

While parked, the only water that should get under the hood is from splashing, or condensation, and is pretty minimal.  I'd say you're looking at arcing, bad gas, or a vac leak.  Since it "got better", the vac leak is not very likely.

I think if no codes were shown, I'd check the plugs and wires, replace the dist. rotor and cap if they're old, and check the various electrical connections.  Perhaps the ISV was acting up?
