It is true that most of the benefit is the result of a better reflector
design rather by the brute force applied. But the improved reflector design
allows you to run higher wattage bulbs without blinding anyone.  The higher
wattage 80/100 is extremely beneficial on rainy nights.  It also improves
high beam operation considerably.
