When I had a lot of drivetrain play, it was cured with a new driveshaft.
Fortunately, I was under warranty at the time. Cost is about 1k as I recall.
I do seem to recall that the U-joints from some BMW will work and cost about
$180. Perhaps this is in the mother list  archives somewhere as I had mine
done at least 3 yrs ago.

When you lift the throttle and the gear shift moves, the most likely cuplrit
is the rear tranny mounts. $40 or so as I recall.

No idea on the surging. Have you checked all the fuses? One of them, front
row as I recall, that appears not to be even used, will cause a wandering
idle. Don;t ask how I learned that ;-)
