Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. After researching this some more, the
gear ratios are the same, but the differential is different 4.11 for the
'91's and 3.89 for the 89-90's. After my mechanic talked to German
Transaxle, their take on it was that swapping out the gearbox part of the
tranny and using the differential part of the '91 tranny was probably more
trouble than it was worth. They also added that the ADZ (the code for my
'91 as well as one other '91 I have seen) has a better gearbox portion than
the earlier AUM that I was researching. In section 34-10-2 of the 200
repair manual it lists AOA, APZ, AUL, and AUM as having the same gear ratios
and a 3.89 final drive. So that's what I know.
