I used the 255's on the track without rubbing, after that little plastic spot on the driver's rear inner fender wore a bit.
Bought/used them because they were a smokin' deal (tires/rims for $750).

I used a Ford tool (BFH) on the rear inside fenders to make, ahem, minor
adjustments for clearance. Only problem with 255's was when the car was
leaned way over to the right (left hand turn) very slight rubbing. Track
tire remains 245-45/16, better fit, many choices. My et is only 40 IIRC.

I've been running 255/40r17's et 35 on my car, with no spacers, no rubbing
except driver's rear fender liner, where about 2"x1/8" has worn a bit.
Works fine.
