The car's alignment is definitely affected. You have to remove the upper
strut plate to remove the strut. That strut plate has slotted holes where
it mounts to the body. They can however be changed in 15 minutes as you
state. You really don't even need the special tool, just a pipe wrench that
fits between the spring.

With all the "strut chatter" of late, thought I'd confirm that you all
know our 91 20V models can have their front struts replaced without a
spring compressor, or any front end disassembly. As described in the
Bentley manual, a special Audi tool is necessary (~$45), but the process
is incredibly easy when compared with traditional McPherson Strut
changes. The car's alignment is unaffected too.
Some discussions have mentioned replacing other components, and this
won't help there. However, if you're just replacing the dampeners, even
with aftermarket components, this is the way to go. If you use
Bilsteins you'll need to access the strut body through the wheel well,
lift the rubber strut boot, and perform final tightening of the strut.
