Mark,
	I've seen a few of the vipers at the dragstrip and the damn things are the
quietest 12 second cars (normally aspirated) I've ever seen.  My '72
Firebird can keep up with them pretty well, beat the "older ones" and lose
by a few car lengths to the newer ones.  That will soon be solved with the
455 going in this summer in place of the 400 :)  I must say though, that the
acceleration of cars like this is totally different from the Audis.  The 20
valves are kind of like a 747....constant thrust in your back that just
pulls hard and constant through the whole RPM range....the big inch motors
ebb and flow through the rpm range, much more "violent"; the initial thrust
is unreal.  However, at altitude things change a bit (as I found out when I
moved from Fl. to Denver).  Up here boost is king.  The S4 I drive is only
about .5 to .75 seconds slower through the 1/4 mile up here than my '72
bird.  It is an absolute blast running with cars that run mid 13 second
quarter miles at sea level with a 4 door sedan :)  Two totally different
characteristics but both very cool.  What can I say...I just like G-forces
:)

I am now searching for the "perfect 16" or 17" rims for the
'91 Avant. Here's the question:
As I spec out the possible rims, I do know that the OEM's
are 15x7.5, 5bolt, 112mm with an offset of 35.
If I buy, say, a 16x8, I know I still need a 112mm, 5 bolt
config, but here's the pitch. Would an 8" rim still indicate
a 35 offset, or would that change??
Any teachers out there? The student is all ears.

The BBS 16x8 wheel, 441 601 025K, which was an option on the 91 V8s with

Had a lot of fun yesterday.  The little door lock rod clip (#839-821-443)
popped out and, having to enter the other side, set of the alarm which
also disables the power to the engine/starter.  Many hours later and
a new reinstalled $2.39 clip (old one wouldn't stay in), the door doesn't
close as well and the alarm doesn't "beep" or arm the alarm.

Any BTDT with this fun little item??

Was cruising along after work yesterday in the left lane when an ominous
sight appeared in my rear view mirror.....approaching fast!  I actually
heard it before I saw the beast, a 2000 Viper GTS, black on black, huge
wheels, awesome exhaust note.  I let him pass, obviously, and could feel
that car as it sped by.  My 200q seemed quite tame in comparison, but then
again most cars would too.

Anybody ever drive or otherwise encounter one of these?  Stock models are
V-10 with around 450 bhp, I think.

If you keep the same offset, but increase width, you'll gain that width half
on the inside, half on the outside.
That is, to go to an 8" wheel, you're gaining a quarter inch towards the
strut and towards the outside.
Measure your available clearances, and use that to determine what you want.
I'm using a 17x8" wheel with 35mm offset.

Good Write up, I'm glad to here someone else has the same type of problems I
do.  On my coupe GT I sheared off the Slave cylinder in the transmission
because I did not realize that it was held in with a role pin and banging it
out with a hammer just broke it in half.  The job would have taken a few
hours to do, instead my car was down for a week while I made a tool to take
the other out of the transmission.  I went through a lot of PB blaster that
week.  I did get in better shape riding my bike to work.

My car has wheel locks with a keyed nut and a bolt that screws into the hub.
The bolt was rusted solidly into the hub.  The bolt is screwed into the hub
with an allen wrench fitting in the top of the bolt.  I couldn't get the
bolt unstuck.  I sprayed it liberally with wd40 - tapped it a few times -
let it soak for a few minutes - but no luck.  I heated it with a propane
torch - threw water on it - no luck.  I though the expansion and contraction
would free it up.  I ended up stripping the allen wrench fitting and still
no luck.  I got out a pair of vise grips and gripped the threads of the bolt
- without any luck.  It was now getting late.  I drove to Home Depot and
purchased a screw extraction kit and a can of Liquid Wrench.  Back home, I
had a difficult time trying to tap the bolt with the screw extraction taps.
The bolt is hardened steel.  I figured persistence would pay off.  My plan
of attack was to soak it in Liquid Wrench and WD40, let it penetrate, and
use the vise-grips with abandon.  After several rounds of this, the bolt
started to turn.  The rest of the job went by without a hitch.  It took
about 2 1/2 hours to unfreeze the bolt, and about 30 minutes to change the
pads.

The bolt is completely useless today, so I'll have to pick one up.  I'm
currently driving with only 4 bolts on the one side.

Total time: 5 1/2 hours.
Lessons learned: many

I do

I've done 3 UFO events.  First was with Carbo-tech Panther pads.  I sent
dead pads, he brought them back to life.  I killed the Panthers, though I
beat the piss out of the brakes. Rather intentionally I might add.  On the
street they squealed a little and were kind of sirty, but less dirty than
stock

I sent back the Panthers and had them reshod into Hawk Blues.  No way a
street pad. An absolute brake lathe and very dirty.  On the track they were
great. Very litle dust compared to the street. Very little dust period and
it wipes right off.  Very strong braking, just use them at the track.  No
warping

Third event was a very wet rain event.  I ran my street Carbo-tech "F"
street pads.  Damn things were great. Not Hawk Blues but it was wet and I
was going slower.

I run Carbo-rech F's on the street year round.  Excellent pad.

All events were Lime Rock. Top speed maybe 110-115mph.

I've also driven Greg Amys 200 at LRP.  This was a BIRA  A8/Carrera test.
A UFO with Blues is no match, but they aren't the joke G60s could be.  UFOs
are great brakes and they did not warp at LRP with Blues or F's from
Carbo-tech.

I've also ruined myself knowing that a Movit Big Red set up fits under my
16" wheels with ease.

I've seen it painted and it was, um, not something I'd like to see
again.  The car was for sale at European Engineering, and was Pearl
colored with the bumpers painted black.  It looked like it had been
sanded smooth, too.  Yuck.

I've had good luck with Mother's Back To Black.  Among other things,
it removes wax very nicely on the trim, including the
foam-rubber-like pieces that connect the rear wheel fenders to the
rear plastic chrome trim. Your mileage may vary of course.  Everybody
has a favorite, and everybody's found the other guy's favorite
doesn't work :-)


If anyone is getting depressed about the condition of the painted
areas of the front+rear bumper covers, don't...buy a can or two of
bug+tar remover, and rub that stuff all over.  I was amazed to
discover perfect, sparkling paint underneath years of tar/grime that
had never come off in car washes, making the bumper look torn up.
The rear took several passes and even then I still didn't get
everything.  I'm sure white/pearl car owners don't have this problem
because the dirt shows up, but on a black car, those areas get
neglected...

I have seen the heat gun trick both work and not work. New list member Sean
Upchurch (new to him gray 91 200 with sport seats) had 2bennett take one to
his rear bumper and it looked good. Another 4k owner tried it with no
change. The method used was to take a high power heat gun to heat up the
black and it darkens the color. I have not tried this myself so can not
offer a BTDT.

Have been workin' on my new to me(91k mi.)91 200 20vTQA, and thanks to this
list and several great web sites, things have been going well. New Bilsteins
and Bomb transformed the car. UFO brakes work very well in this car. 87
degree thermostat and new rad. fan fusable link, and lots of switch light
bulbs installed. I think I need a need a transaxle seal on the passenger
side. Oil burning smell from the cat below it. Small cover on trans. was a
bit loose, tightened that, but still have smell. Looks like a tight fit to
replace that seal. Do I have to take down the exhaust header? I hope not.
Any BTDT??
	I guess next, is to get an alignment done. But before I do this, I
feel a thumping in the steering wheel when going over rough pavement. I've
cranked down on the rack adjustment bolt and the new shocks have helped.
I've read a lot about bushing replacement, tie rod ends, ball joints, etc.
But before I replace anything, any advice would be appreciated. Is the most
likely culprit the strut top mount bushings? Also, how do I check the tie
rods and ball joints?  TIA

This stuff is called Forever Black. It's a black dye that is like a shoe
polish in a bottle. I did my bumpers about three years ago with EXCELLENT
results. It takes a while, remove the bumpers, clean them with the cleaner,
tape off the painted area, apply the stuff (just like shoe polish when you
were a kid....Kiwi in a bottle), let dry and then reinstall bumpers. You
won't believe you eyes!

You have to take the bumpers off though, which isn't hard. I wanted to take
the mirrors off and do them, but never did. They are grey and the bumpers
are still basically black.

Try it, you won't regret.

Gary-

The bump in the steering wheel is the airbag cover (where you push the
horn). Mine did it and then I tightened the torx screws on the back of the
steering wheel and it went away! That was years ago, but the springs are now
weak and don't hold the cover off of the steering wheel like it should.

Amazing, I thought it was something in the steering, front end too....but it
wasn't.

To troubleshoot, drive down the road and put your fingers between the
steering wheel and cover, one on each side, about 9 and 3 O'clock. Drive
over some bumps and see if it's still there. If not, you figured it out!

Hope it's this simple for you.
