Agree with fundalo; don't know how bent valves would occur with that
incident, unless cam gets jammed and timing belt jumps or breaks. As for a
good source for a distributor, I had the best luck with the parts
connection. Best price, and quick delivery since I live on the west coast.
Didn't try Carlson's for price reference.
I also had some play in the shaft of my old dist, but it doesn't sound to be
to the same degree as what your experiencing, unless you meant millimeters.
Had to replace mine because of a hall sender problem. Also had some oil
leakage w/in distributor at time or replacement.
As for the distributor alignment tool, I wound up not using it. Just set
the engine to tdc on the cam, then align the distributor to the same upon
install (tick mark on the rim of the dist with tick mark on hall sender
metal sheild). Ned Ritchie recomended turning dist body app 1 deg clockwise
I belive relative to dist to help prevent crossfiring. Didn't quite pick up
on his logic there-just set it up at tdc.
Machined metal gears may become available soon, but if you're in a pinch go
new, many problems are eliminated.

I agree, it doesn't seem possible, but it does seem very odd that the dist
was changed and shortly afterwards the cam locked up. Perhaps a peice of the
old plastic gear got stuck in the drive gear on the cam? This info is second
hand, so I don't know the details. I just know I don't want to duplicate the
situation.
