When I went through the radiator repair dance a few years
back, I ran across an Audi bulletin which recommended a
certain epoxy patch material, which I did not try. So Audi
believes it can be done. After two OEM replacements I
switched to a metal radiator - total cost with aux radiator
mods, $185 - to end the problem for ever. Check with any
foreign car radiator shop for Modine and other mfrs.
Beware, listers, that any evacuation of the cooling system
(water pump failure, broken hose, etc.) will invariably
cause a thermal crack in the upper hose neck. I have
repaired this crack temporarily with a brass one inch pipe
embedded in epoxy. The pipe is the standard toilet tank
stand pipe and is available cheap from your plumbing supply
shop. Not a permanent fix.
