[200q20v] Re: [200q20v]PS pump rebuild, was: steering wheel "pulses" at low speeds

Hi Peter,

I don't consider myself an expert on these pumps, but do have some
experience. External leaks are usually the O-ring seals under the
cylinder heads, and easy fix. I had a problem on my old 5KTQ that
was leaking at the split line between the rear and center section.
I could not seal this problem with repeated 0-ring replacements in
this area. Turned out that it had an internal wear problem in the
pressure relief valve, and so I had to replace with a rebuilt one.

Bentley has a good description of the PS pressure test and resealing in
Section 48. In your case, I suspect that your pump will not meet the
pressure test, in which case they say to replace the pump. Before
doing so, if you are so inclined, you could remove the pressure relief
valve and see if you can find out why it is leaking or relieving at
too low a pressure. If the shaft seal is not leaking, don't
mess with it. So, you need not buy a resealing kit, as I have the
O-ring part numbers which you can purchase from a local bearing house
much cheaper.

Regards, Bernie
