Ya know, I actually take issue with that.  I don't think the sound quality
of the Bose system is as terrible as people make it out to be.  I will admit
that after seeing a concert at the Gorge Amphitheatre out here in
Washington, I did notice some holes, but all in all, I think it sounds good.

I think the sound spectrum is well covered, and the stereo imaging is VERY
well balanced.  That's the one thing that I've always noticed in aftermarket
stereo instalation, some speakers are always predominant; I don't hear one
speaker louder than any other in the Bose system.  I can always hear all of
the speakers, and it's noticable from every "seat in the house."  One of the
most interesting observations I made one day was that the change in stereo
imaging when I had my window rolled down.  As the window was rolled back up,
the sound to my left ear filled in.  That's the kind of acoustical
engineering you're not going to get at the Good Guys, or through
Crutchfield.

I'm not going to stand up for the potential firework display, and I am not
so nieve that I don't think things can be improved, but I do disagree about
to the "hideous" nature of Bose sound quality.  For me the cash it would
take to replace all of the "substandard components just isn't worth it.

Ian,
IMHO as I have said on multiple occasions, the Bose stereo
is crap, it's worth gutting if you care about the sound quality.
Otherwise, look into the recall that Audi has/or soon will issue.

You should flush the entire hydraulic system with Pentosin 11S
ASAP if that is the case- hopefully, the ATF hasn't killed your seals
yet.
