He must've said take _out_ the tranny, not "take apart". I'm not sure 
why the pilot bearing failure would cause the car "slip".  Anyway, I 
really don't know what any symptoms of pilot-bearing failure are, but 
when my tranny was dropped in order to replace the input shaft oil 
seal, I also asked to have the throw-out bearing and pilot bearing 
replaced (the clutch had been replaced about 20k miles ago by PO and 
throw-out bearing was probably fine, but what the hell.) As you might 
suspect, the pilot bearing for our cars is a special one--not used in 
previous years. I got it from Carlsen Audi, and AFAIR it cost about 
$60 or 65.
