Driving with no power steering high pressure hose

Ah, yes it does give one an appreciation of power steering and brake assist.
At Steamboat Springs Winter Driving School last year (2001) I hit a snowbank
so hard on the first day that the snow packed up and broke off the hard line
to the steering rack (which wasn't the correct steering rack, as it turned
out) because the line was not routed virtually flush with the rack as it was
supposed to be.  I ended up cutting the hydraulic pump belt and drove it
this way for the rest of the event and for almost a month afterwards.
Needless to say, my arms got a lot stronger and I avoided too spirited
driving, keeping in mind the extra power assist required by the brakes.
