You mentioned you were in school, so I'm guessing(unless you're a
grad student or doing continuing ed) that you're under 25. You're
also male, put the two together and you're in the highest insurance
bracket around aside from just-licensed male drivers(my insurance
dropped when I hit 21, by a decent amount.) As Paul mentioned,
being single also raises your rates.

I'm not sure I buy the vehicle being classified as
semi-high-performance; first off, when it came out, it was considered
pretty sporty...but insurance companies are notoriously bad about
classifying specific models. The WRX owners, for example, got away
scott free until the insurance companies figured it out(and then they
all got pissed when insurance companies slapped them with sky-high
rates; I suspect part of the reason insurance companies woke up was
because I bet a lot of WRX's met untimely ends and owners were
getting speeding tickets left+right.) That said, Metlife had a very
specific database of cars; my insurance with them listed the engine,
quattro, etc.

Excise tax can work in similar ways too...my 200q20v got billed, when
I bought it, as being a 100 FWD auto or something; excise tax here in
MA is based off the lowest cost version of the vehicle you own.
