Weird AC Behavior

Paul, I had the same problem with my old 5000 Avant. After much frustration
and untold hours of testing, it turned out the be the climate control (vacuum
switch box) which is located behind the glove box.  It was not holding
pressure.  They cost less than $200 and are made by Delco, (also found it mid
80's Cadilac's).

It is easy to replace, and can be tested with a hand vacuum pump.
