Radio- Why not quality aftermarket?

At the risk of sounding like a teenage OEM butcher car
tuner, why not replace the Audi audio system with a
quality aftermarket head-unit and speakers.  I know it
is not German, but one could make it look as stock as
possible and not have to worry about all of these
problems with the OEM system.  Can aftermarket
speakers be used under the stock covers?
