[200q20v] Re: How to start fast and not look like too much of an idiot

I don't think anyone can actually explain it point by point.
A couple of my friends have commented about my ability
to shift quickly and smoothly in my (and their) various
Quattros. I'll be darned if I can explain it in words. I don't
stress the hardware like dropping the clutch would. It's
going to be a mix of smooth, quick shifting, throttle control
to maximize boost pressure, and rpms.
Lately in my '89 200 w/o bypass valve, I've learned that keeping
the throttle cracked a bit really helps keep the boost up and not
running all the way to redline helps a great deal too, both on the
top end and the bottom after the shift. I had a '91 Avant so I'm
familiar with the 20v turbo as well. Running it to 7k is fun and
sounds nice but sometimes it's not the best for acceleration times.
Minimize time off-boost, minimize shifting times. Neither of
these require beating the hardware. For quick take-offs, I
do slip the clutch, but as little as possible. There's a knack
to that too; a happy medium.
