My new(er) '91 200q has a rattle that seems to be loudest near the
rear of the valve train. I had hoped that the new timing belt would
reduce the level of clatter--as you had found. But alas it had no
such effect. Fortunately the clatter is inaudible from inside the car
or even outside if the hood is closed. My other '91 200q had its cam
gear chain replaced by the PO--under warranty--because of complaints
about noise. I suspect that (new chain) is what might be needed to
cure the clatter in my red car.
BTW, Wolff, what led you to discover the cracked distributor gear in
the first place?
