Gary:

Sounds like the ground path is being asked to sink more current than its
potential capacity...causing the overheating and melting of the plastic.

I would first recheck your ground connections to ensure that they are
indeed clean and low resistance....an at the same time ensure that the
ground wire is the same gauge wire as the wire supplying current to the bulbs

I'm not familiar with the 2Bennett harness kit - does it include relays?
