Did you check the larger hydraulic fluid reservoir (the one with the hose
going to the power steering pump)?  A low fluid level in that reservoir
also will turn on the red "brake" light, as will a failing brake pressure
accumulator ("bomb").  The warning for brake pad wear appears in the other
message window on your instrument cluster and looks like this: (0).
