cruise control / trip computer problem

Usually the cruise control works, but sometimes not.  I've noticed that
during the non-working spells, the trip computer mpg function
deflates..if reset it will never get above 0.0 mpg.  As soon as the
cruise control comes back (usually after an engine stop/start cycle) the
mpg function notices that the car is moving again and begins to produce
reasonable numbers.  During all of this the speedometer continues to
work fine.   

I'm wondering if this is just another symptom of intermittent
connections on the instrument PCB and/or it's connectors, or something
else?.   The auto-check display does get mixed up sometimes as well.
