That wrapped string idea is truly inspired. I also didn't see it
until "too late".

Another advantage of the "wrapped string" method is that it also
holds the o-ring in place until the bolt is threaded. I wrapped a
rubber band around the bolt to retain the o-ring; then once the bolt
was started, I tore the off the rubber band with a needle-nose pliers.
