Thanks for the reply, Phil.  I was able to lock the car with the battery
disconnected, so I thought there must be a way to disable the automatic
system.  I just wasn't sure if it was as simple as unplugging the pump next
to the battery.

Bentley is weak on this problem.  It sounds like I should be able to get in
the car, next to the vacuum pump, and hear the pump running after my wife
locks the car, if your theory is correct.
