Isn't the factory system stainless steel as well?

Both my mufflers are rotted down the bottom middle ( just turned 87k miles
though). It appears that the only stainless pieces are the pipe from the cats
to the front muffler and the tail pipe.

And if not, if prices are
similar, given that a factory system lasts over 12 years, why reinvent the
wheel? I think in this instance, there's not much to be improved on from
the OE setup.

Maybe you're right, seeing that it would be a sixth to an eighth the value of
the car then a call to Shokan or similar for a used system could be in order.
Or take the system off and get out the stainless sheet, pop rivets, and
permatex

Any listers in Germany seen and heard a BN-Pipes exhaust system
? www.bn-pipes.de/dateien/audi/audi-e.htm[1]
The price, with shipping included, is almost exactly the OE price but the
system is stainless steel. I had a Stebro system on 10v turbo once and it
was a little too loud, though nice sound. BN-Pipes claims his mufflers are
larger so it will be a little quieter than Stebro.
