Paul,
Which upper neck is broken?
If it were the upper neck which points toward the front of the car (ie the
one for the aux radiator), then I have 2 theories.
1.) Broken while tightening the 13mm nut which locks the p/s belt adjuster
in place. The p/s belt is removed to do the t-belt, and there is not much
room between the p/s pump and aux radiator hose/neck to loosen/tighten this
nut.
2.) Removing the aux rad hose from the upper radiator neck allows a few more
inches of travel for a 13mm wrench to tighten this p/s belt adjuster lock
bolt. Over tightening the hose clamp can crack the neck. Especially if the
radiator was old and the plastic was getting brittle.
