being that this is a known failure mode, i would dare recommend carrying a
spare ignition switch which can prevent you from getting stranded.
If the switch fails, remove the knee bar, reach underneath and pull the
harness out of the ignition switch, twist it to start the engine and drive
home...

That's the way thieves stole an old 75 Fiat 124 that I had - they just cut
the wires off my ignition switch and wired in their own. I had a heck of a
time re-wiring my switch as all the schematics I had were in Italian. Wire
color Azul y Rojo, etc :-)
