My first car was an old type 43 Audi 100 Diesel with 69 hp or
something. After that, I had an 1984 Mercedes 300D automatic. Both
things were ridicously slow, but they worked. Both had more than 250k
miles. I didn't wreck any of them either, but the Mercyless Benz was
slowly "disappearing" due to rust, even if I tried to keep if nice and
clean. In addition, here in Norway, you have to be 18 years to drive.
You can have a learner's permit from you're 16, but I'd say that not
many people speed or race wth mom or dad in the passenger seat.. :-)

Having a relatively fast car won't be very dangerous, but when the
person behind the wheel starts using the power to speed/race, it
becomes dangerous. It's possible to be an unsafe driver in a 70s Honda
Civic too.. That said, many of the accidents with young drivers come
from distraction - they fiddle with the radio, speak in the phone etc.
when driving, then don't pay enough attention, and BANG!

Another thing: Here in Norway and most other European countries, you
actually _have_ to pass the driver's test on a manual transmission
vehicle if you aren't disabled.. In addition, automatic transmissions
are usually found on newer, more expensive cars..
