I'd be willing to bet it is a clamping diode (or a flyback diode?) When
I used to tinker with electronics, it was well know that when you
engerize a coil, there is a voltage spike kicked back which needs to be
clamped. A diode is good at that (given that it is rated properly and
installed in correct orientation...)
I'd vote for Bernie's fix!
