installation, causing unequal stretch and deflection of the ring as the
cylinder head was screwed into place.  Grease well!  NEVER hold the rack
against the end stops!

Thanks for the reply.  To add more detail :
first seal blew a few months ago(during cold weather), this was the original
pump - 100k+ miles.
second seal blew within 10 seconds, this pump was removed from a car only
because of some minor leaking but worked good.
third seal blew again within 10 seconds, this pump was a ZF reman unit.
All 3 times, steering was working OK.
I've never had this problem and haven't heard of it, leaking seals - yes - but
not blowing out explosively from under the cap.
Any input is greatly appreciated, I'll post results of findings as I go.
