Pad and rotor combinations usually establish a matching (mating?) 
wear-pattern of grooves. When the pads are switched, the groove 
patterns no longer will match up, and I'd expect some extra wear on 
both pad and rotor as the two surfaces establish a new wear pattern.

Ah, those things--yes, I remember them and do agree they're not 
needed. I was thinking about those _other_ springy things that pivot 
at the back end of the backing plate and keep the pads pressed in.
