Pobst/Galati, 1/2 finish! Last few laps were under caution- I have
no idea why, but the SCCA decided that a guy who went off in Big Bend
REALLY needed to be moved(he was way off) AND that they had to send
out a truck etc. Why they didn't leave him be and let the race
finish is beyond me...anyway...

Hot off the camera:

http://frank.mercea.net/zoph/photos.php?album_id=16

More images to come later of stuff besides the cars on track...plenty
more of the cars, the drivers, etc...also two photos of the Audifans
crowd with Pobst/Galati etc...just wanted to put these up first as I
have stuff I have to go take care of.

Oh- if you're using Windows with a newer version of IE, it may try to
resize these for you (they're 900x600, pushing the limits for a
1024x768 display) in which case they'll look like crap-
pixelated/distorted. Buried in the Options window is a setting to
turn off auto-image resizing.

Gents:

Recently had the AC (R134 retrofit) serviced.

Since then, the cc blower fan seems to only come on when it wants to...
I can hear the flap positions in the airbox change when I select off, econ,
hi/lo, auto, def, but no fan, even when I push the hi/lo fans speed
buttons. Changing the temperature also has no effect on the fan ( air temp
DOES change)
No error codes on channel 00.

This morning the blower finally came on after 30 minutes of driving.
Had to stop and turn off the engine. When I returned and started the car
again, the fan came on immediately.

Any BTDTs before I dig into the plenum with a voltmeter ?

Red herring, very clever ;)

Sounds like classic intermittent blower motor brushes in need of replacement
to me, is this still the original blower for that car? You can check for
full voltage (fan set to HI) at the blower connector, maybe whack the blower
while you are in there and see if it helps.

Peter,
Could be that your cc fan brushes need replacing, BTDT. Check the voltage
to the motor, or apply 12V to it as a check.

Folks,

I know this has been covered, but a search of the archives came up empty.

Does anyone have a link to a schematic to install an aftermarket RF alarm
and tie it into the factory power lock system? I'd like to install an
aftermarket actuator but use the factory alarm and locking system. Any
specific recommendations?

TIA

Tom

There's been a bit of curiosity as to how I acquired the new wagon.
It basically fell into my lap.

My wife Bonnie is due with our first child in mid-October and so we decided
it was time to get her a
more modern, comfortable, reliable, and even automatic for her commute to
Boston car. I hit the
jackpot on a '97 A6 Wagon in Pearl with about 65K miles. It was an Ebay
deal from Sarasota, FL.
Ebay is always a bit of a risk, so I was thrilled when I got off the plane
to discover a near
flawless example with Bose, third seat, and not a single door ding. The car
also came with complete
maintenance records, and I paid $8400. I took a day and a half to drive it
home to NH.

Within a couple of days my curiosity had me calling the former owners. The
first was very friendly
and only had the car for six months. They just changed their mind and opted
for a BMW 540I instead.
I then called the original owner. Again, they were very friendly. As some
of you know, these
calls are usually met with a guarded response from former owners. As
motorheads, we feel the need
to bother these poor people at home anyway.

The woman was quite kind and told me that her needs had just changed but
that the '97 A6 was always
dealer serviced and that she was "the kind of person who always parks at the
far end of the lot to
avoid door dings." I thanked her for taking care of the car and we made
some small talk. She was
widowed a few years back but had re-married. Her first husband was a
Porsche-Audi guy and she was
planning on giving his old 911 to her daughter for college graduation (lucky
daughter).

She then casually mentioned that her husband had had another wagon that she
only used occasionally
and should probably sell. "It's a 5-speed," she says, "It's a turbo," she
says, "It's got 53,000
miles," she says. I already had evidence of the way this woman cared for
her cars and ten or
fifteen minutes later we struck a deal. Two weeks later I was on Jet Blue
again bound for Sarasota
on a mission to re-unite these two wagons under a new family name. I didn't
steal it, but it was
way less than 10 grand and I would have gladly paid that now that I have it.
I did bring down some
NH maple syrup and some other New England goodies for her kindness (like
having the timing belt done
because "I don't want you driving it to NH and having it break halfway home"
and no, I'm not
kidding).

The car is bamboo with a travertine (light brown) leather interior. My
first thoughts were, "Oh,
what a shame," but it's actually damn nice looking and it's so close to
perfect it's what you'd
expect if you bought one used in 1993. The brakes are fresh UFO's and the
seats are comfort. I
even have the window sticker from Carousel Motors. It lived in Minnesota
for most of it's life but
never saw snow as it was primarily "the lake house car." I kind of feel
like I have this
responsibility to take care of this fine car. Almost like it's not mine and
that I'm just fortunate
enough to be able to take care of it while I have it. Now that it's cleaned
up and waxed it's
stunning. I say that, not to brag, but just because it's a thrill to drive
and I know how lucky I
am.

Final thoughts? Make those phone calls, ask those silly questions, and
there's bound to be a payoff
someday. This was my own personal and proverbial "car in the barn."

Joseph,
To answer your questions, assuming the wrench that looked at it is
correct, it will be Ok to simply unbolt the manifold and replace the seal.
All the O-rings at the joints need to bee replaced also. Before closing it
all up pour some oil into each joint and some into the compressor. You can,t
check pressure with a tire gauge, you need the manifold and gauges. A flush
will never hurt, it can help find any spots that may have rusted out from
the system being open and will remove any water.
As far as replacing any parts, the drier is probably toast. The orifice
tube is most likely OK, but they are fairly cheap so...
Your local dealer or FLAPS can tell you the capacity of the system, if you
have access to gauges it will help a lot as you should really charge to a
pressure not a weight of refridgerant.

  HTH and Good luck.
                      Ben

Tom,

If your car is a 200-20V, it was equipped with the factory Anti Theft
System. The way to go is to install only a RKE, remote keyless entry system
integrated into the Audi ATS and the pneumatic door locking system. Don't
buy the redundant alarm system. I have published the wiring info to both
the 200-20V and the 20V lists, but will fwd what I have. I've not put a key
into a door for the past 5 years, and at one time had 3 Audis working on the
same RKE.

I live in the Twin Cities and work near Carousel. I think I may have seen
your bamboo colored wagon parked at an office building also not far from
Carousel. I have not seen it for the last year or so, possibly meaning
that it migrated to the Florida area where you discovered it. That bamboo
exterior color really grows on you, I know, my 100 is the same color.
Otherwise, it sounds like it is the same as my pearl 200 20v wagon. The
Audi gods have smiled down on you.
