Been a few moons since my crash course in ignition switch damage,
but I can believe that you may only have a broken switch assembly.
The switch contains the spring that returns the key from start to run
and could also bind the tumbler in a way to prevent the lock from
engaging as well as trapping the key.

Pop out the InstClus to get easy access to the set screws on top
of the assembly where the ign switch is mounted.  I can't remember
if you would be able to actually pull the switch off the back like that
'cuz I had the underside opened up every time I went in.

Once the switch is removed, the extent of the damage may be easy
to assess.  If the tab from the tumbler comes out with the switch, errr....

I relied heavily on the procedure in the Bentley for the full procedure
to remove the lock assembly.  I also found a locksmith supply who
didn't make any stink about selling me a replacement black cap to
rebuild the tumbler assembly since you have to cut the old one off.
