Care must be taken when installing the seals to ensure that the seal is not
damaged by the keyway on the shaft.
Learned that one the hard way, bought the crank seal installer from Zelenda
for $8 a long time ago
consists of two plastic sleeves: an inner which is placed over the crank to
protect the seal,
then you then lubricate the seal with oil, slide in over the sleeve,
then use the crank bolt to drive the outer sleeve (which pushes the crank
seal into place) to the proper depth.
No mess, no fuss, no guesswork.
My mechanic had his own approach - put a piece of microfilm around the
crank (to cover the key way) and use a socket to push in the seal.
