Sure..the oem design provides the condensed oil a number of places in 
which to collect (just kidding).

My guess is that the accordian  provides a combination of strength 
with flexibility and kink-resistance (even more important might be to 
enable easier hose installation/removal; also accommodate slight 
movement between the engine and intercooler). Just speculation.
