operating temperature?

So, just came back from a extended drive and measured temps with the
infrared temp gun. Can't really get at the thermostat housing, but reading
off the water manifold on side of block I come up with 183F, 83'sh C. Have a
80C thermostat.

Gauge reads at first major tick (past three lower ones, apx 10 o'clock
position). Normally this is what it reads, excepting the 3 or 4 times it's
stuck open in the last six months... Of course the 87C will read slightly
higher..
