Looking in my Streets and Trips program, it looks like you could go Huntsville, AL,  Memphis, TN,  Springfield, MO, Wichita, KS, Garden City, KS and head north at La Junta, CO. Total trip about 1500 miles. It adds about 90 miles ( and 1 days driving time) over the "prefered" rt via Nashville and Evansville.
