New TBV

Hey Phil: I have been through that one more than once (at 307,000 miles)
and TBV replacement does wonders. The other symptom - dying when hot - is
more likely a gunked up throttle body. I regularly open and clean out the
gunk around the throttle plate. The build up prevents the plate from closing
cleanly and the engine gets an unexpected gulp of gas and dies.

Hi,
Does the Pentosin 11s supercede the 7.1? Can I use the 7.1 in my 91 Audi 200
TQ 20V? I have checked online and I get both as part # G 002 000 as called
for.

You can use the 11s in a 7.1 system, but not vice versa per Audi tech
bulletins.
no BTDT however

I hadn't known that a defective TBV could cause major bucking at
moderate to high boost, but when I replaced mine it solved both that
problem and the commonly known die-during-hot-idle problem. Is this
news or commonly known?

Greetings,
I am wondering if its possible to replace the ball socket (Bentley page
34-40-1, item 11) without major (like tranny drop) disassembly. Has
anyone done it?
Regards,
Yevgeniy.

You can do it, but REALLY difficult with so little room. (BTDT). I would
suggest jacking up trans and removing trans mounts. Let the jack down just
enough that you can get your hands in there!
While you're in "there" I would also check the "cross rod" to see if any
slop...

I've read here about replacing Item #4, the adjusting rod, with the tranny
in place, so I imagine it's possible to replace the socket into which it
fits. If we had archives you could search, you probably could find
reference to the adjusting rod reports (and maybe the socket too).

I have been adding the 11S to my 91 200 TQ 20V. I now need to replace the
hydraulic pump. Do I need to flush the system? The fluids may been mixed if
the 7.1 was original fluid.

Well, what _is_ news to me is that the TBV is associated with what
you call a "die-during-hot-idle problem". I've read hundreds of posts
over the years about defective bypass valve symptoms, but never that
one. The valve was designed to avoid a sudden slamming shut of the
throttle plate when under boost and coming quickly off throttle (a
common example is accelerating with significant boost pressure and
then suddenly lifting and braking to a hard stop). With a
malfunctioning TBPV, the boost pressure can slam the throttle plate
tightly closed and starve the engine (so it stalls). I've never heard
of the TBV in respect to simply dying "during hot idle". Why would it
cause that, I wonder?
As to that other symptom: bucking under high boost: I assume that
could be caused by any manifold pressure (hose or hose clamp) leak so
that may happen at one of the hose connections to the valve of it's
too loose (valve defective or not). When you replaced your TBV, you
probably also got better (tighter) hose clamping as an "extra" benefit.
Phil.
