starter inconsistency

Sorry to poop on your party pooping, but I was going to recommend the exact 
same thing a hammer...

When my starter went out a couple of years ago, it was intermittent and 
frustrating.  A dealership friend recommended the hammer test people in his 
shop used; if it doesn't start, hit it with a hammer and see what happens 
then.    If it starts afterwords, the starter is caput.  That's what I did, 
and after doing an impact diagnosis, put in a new starter.  That was the 
cure.

Anyhow, it's not like you need to smash the shit out of the thing.  Just a 
tap is all that is needed, and given how tight it is to get in there, that's 
about all the access allows.

Sorry to be a party-pooper here.  Starters contain a warning label
with a hammer and a big red X; magnets are damaged by impact.  They
can shatter (they're brittle) or demagnetize.  You can also deform the
case enough that the magnets touch the rotor.
