Pete:

Either the linkage bolt is loose, or the ball on the selector shaft 
has loosened.

Jack up and support the front of the car, remove the driver's wheel 
and look for the arm where the selector rod attaches to the 
transmission rod- there will be a curved arm with a ball that 
connects to the shifter linkage.  Have a helper move the shifter and 
while you watch the movement of the ball...if its moving in 
relationship to the arm, it needs to be removed and either welded to 
the arm or replaced.

The R&R is doable from jackstands, but easier of course from a lift.
