alright last question - ticking lifters?

What weight oil did the dealer use in your recent oil change? My guess is
something that is commonly used in today's cars... the 1.8t specs an
especially light weight 0 or 5Wnothing or thereabouts. In my opinion that's
too light for the older engines. I'm sure I've read that some use it and
report no problems, but the older engines weren't really designed for it.
Anyway, check that first. That might also explain why you didn't hear any
ticking when you bought the car and do now.
I run 15W40 in the summer and 5W40 synthetic in the winter.
