The first clutch in my Avant was replaced by the previous owner at 138,214
in Feb of '01. The repair order says only "clutch pedal heavy".
At the same time, the rack was replaced, a noisy fuel pump was replaced, and
spark plug wires and a "throttle hose" were replaced because "engine
misfires at times".
Clutch replacement included clutch kit, pilot bearing, flywheel seal, shift
rod seal & gasket, 2 trans mounts, and trans and rear diff were refilled
with Redline.
Pretty thorough service in all, though for $2055 it should have been. At 10
years old with about 14k per year in the Los Angeles area, it probably saw
some pretty heavy use.
It's at 238,745 today. I bought it in Feb '06 at 227,750. The clutch had a
bit of a judder on take-up then which has disappeared over time. This car
has always shifted better than any other of my type 44's, including my V8 5
speed.
I think George's clutch is original at over 300k.

Must have been tough miles ?? I put 300k + on my first avant and never had
to mess with the clutch....i was extremely impressed with the drivetrain..i
used the vehicle for some very strange towing operations and smoked the
clutch but it never gave up.
Anyway, biking is good for you, enjoy it instead of stressing over it.

I would check the steering rack and clutch hydraulics.
My first clutch lasted to 175k, only got 20 on the second. It had a
defective clutch disk that was not riveted correct. It would get out of
round
when it shifted on the rivets and hit the pins on the flywheel causing the
clutch to not disengage.
Good luck, Pete 91 Avant
