Thanks Dave,
i'll get the cap and rotor. the gear is still the nylon one - the metal one is
$75 and i was under the impression it wasn't super easy to replace.
i suppose there's not harm in getting the new regulator for a whole $15.
anybody know which one i should get - the 28mm or the 32mm one?

I'm pretty sure the regulator brushes are at their wear limit by the sounds of
it... as soon as you put a load on the unit it draws every amp available sapping
the entire system. I do recommend a new cap and rotor while your doing
electrical things, what about the distributor drive gear sir???
