You're right -- save the 20v200 for the good times.
As for the Subaru, yes they are popular, but you might not be so happy with one
coming from the 20V200. I'd consider a VW Passat, instead. A newer, low mileage
one shouldn't break the bank, and if you're lucky, you'll find one with 4Motion.
If not, FWD with good snows should get you through to mud season.
