Strong fingers is the key word. I've gone from being able to do things
like this with fingertips to needing to lever with my bodyweight. Or being
able to get a whole hand on something. Decreased strength began in my 60s
and has followed me into my 70s.

Jim,
Nothing fancy - brute force and strong fingers, sometimes clip one side and
use
screwdriver to pry agoinst the manifold whild tip forces against the middle
of the clip.
Removing stuff really won't make it easier to force the clips in.
I have done many of these and has gone from seemingly impossible at first
to not so bad
- Just a matter of getting the hang of it. Step back, take a deep breath
and try again.

I did manage to release the distributor cap, and confirm the rotor is
turning, but
getting the 2 metal clips back into position proved too much for me. Do
you need to
remove the intake manifold to see what you are doing, or is it all by blind
touch?
