I did loosen a line at the filter, gas squirted out. Just can't
understand why it would not be the MAF if the condition is the same when I unplug
the harness from it.

I haven't followed the thread closely so maybe this was already covered.
Anyway the car was (still is) a Volvo with a Ford engine transplanted, so
everything is suspect. I found that I could idle up a hill (very light
throttle actually) that I could not drive up accelerating normally. The
culprit was the main fuel pump (there is also an in-tank pump). I
replaced
it with a known good used pump ($10), still going strong.
